Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮 ハルヒ, Suzumiya Haruhi) ist die Protagonistin der Light-novel-Reihe Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu und der Animeserie Die Melancholie der Haruhi Suzumiya. Diese fiktive Figur wurde von Nagaru Tanigawa erdacht und von Noizi Itoi gezeichnet.

Zu Beginn der Serie kommt Haruhi in eine neue Schule. Die hübsche, aber überaus exzentrische Oberschülerin erklärt als sie sich vorstellt, dass sie sich nur für Aliens, Esper und Zeitreisende interessiere mit „normalen“ Menschen nichts zu tun haben möchte. Da sie mit den Club-Angeboten ihrer Schule enttäuscht ist, dass diese langweilig seien, gründet sie einen Eigenen, die SOS Brigade. Zu den Club, der nach mysteriösen Ereignissen und übernatürlichen Wesen ausschau hält, gehören Kyon, Yuki Nagato (das einzige Mitglied des Literatur-Clubs, die Haruhi mitzählt), Mikuru Asahina und Itsuki Koizumi. Die SOS Brigade dient aber auch dazu, Haruhi zu unterhalten und zu überwachen, da diese über gottähnliche Kräfte verfügt, mit der Sie die Welt verändern oder zerstören könnte. Haruhi selber ist das aber nicht bewusst.

Die Melancholie der Haruhi Suzumiya

In der Geschichte selber erfährt man nur wenig über Haruhis Herkunft und Familie, aber in der 14. Episode erzählt sie Kyon von einem Besuch von einem Baseball-Spiel in ihrer Kindheit mit ihrer Familie. Sie war geschockt von der hohen Anzahl an Menschen in diesem Stadion. Nachdem Stadionbesuch rechnete sie mit einem Taschenrechner und realisierte, dass sie nur ein kleiner Teil der Welt ist und das alle Menschen ein normales Leben führen. Aber sie glaubte das wenigstens eine Person in der Welt ein wirklich interessantes und einzigartiges Leben führen müsste und diese Person wollte sie selber sein. So begann sie nach übernatürlichen und merkwürdigen Dingen, Ereignissen und Wesen zu suchen.

Throughout middle school, she gained a reputation as an eccentric for incidents such as painting hieroglyphs on the school grounds and moving all desks into the hallways and rejecting every boy who asked her out for being boring (the longest lasting a week, the shortest being five minutes).

In middle school, Haruhi becomes known for several things, such as putting talismans up around school, dating and dumping every guy who dumps her out, and, most notably, drawing a huge graffiti mural on the field on the night of Tanabata. The person who drew this was actually Kyon under the orders of Haruhi in "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody", alias "John Smith". This "John Smith" implied to Haruhi that there were strange things out there and that there might be interesting people at North High, inspiring her to attend the school.

Her entrance into high school is marked by her meeting her fellow student, Kyon, who proves to be the first to engage with her in serious conversation. He proves to be the inspiration for Haruhi, in despair over the lack of interesting school clubs, to create her own: the Spreading Excitement all Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade (世界を大いに盛り上げるための涼宮ハルヒの団, Sekai o Ōini Moriageru Tame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan) or the SOS Brigade.

When Haruhi comes to North High, she meets Kyon, the first person to talk to her. She takes an interest in him because he reminds her of John Smith, and eventually drags him into creating her new club, the SOS Brigade. By seizing a room used by Yuki Nagato and abducting Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi to join her club, Haruhi unknowingly drags the exact types of people she wants into her life.

When Haruhi sees Kyon wrestling with Mikuru over a computer mouse, she becomes jealous and creates an alternate reality (closed space) in which she and Kyon are the only inhabitants. This becomes a threat, as the new world would possibly replace the old world. By kissing her using clues from Yuki and a future Mikuru, Kyon convinces Haruhi to bring the old world back.

Haruhi thus becomes a participant in many activities surrounding her that she does not understand: the SOS Brigade wins a competition by modifying a bat; a logo for the SOS Brigade that she creates awakens an ancient data lifeform; she causes time to loop over and over because she does not want summer to end; she confuses the fictional world with the real world while filming a movie, causing the movie's events to come true; Yuki must hack into a computer game in order to satisfy her desire to win it; the world is altered, creating an alternate version of her with no powers; a mysterious alien entity traps her and the SOS Brigade in a strange mansion; a Mikuru from eight days later appears behind her back; a new potential god is revealed as Kyon's friend Sasaki.

In "Editor-In-Chief★Straight Ahead!", it is revealed that Haruhi was the one to create the central foundation for the time plane theory, eventually resulting in Mikuru's ability to time travel. Because Haruhi lives next door to the boy who is implied to have created Mikuru's TPDD, Kyon realizes that it is possible for the boy to have seen the theory and thus create the mechanism.

In her second year, Haruhi starts to accept new first-year recruits into her Brigade, but is picky about who enters; she kicks out who she wants and challenges those who have the guts to return to the brigade room. When Yuki mysteriously falls ill, Haruhi organizes the rest of the brigade to go rescue her-->
